Honoring Francis Rolfson

for Northern California Ballet

Francis and his daughter Bethany

We mourn the loss of a remarkable individual and celebrate the impact he had on us. Francis Rolfson was more than just a long term financial sponsor for Northern California Ballet; he was a cherished friend whose presence illuminated our lives in countless ways.

Francis’s contributions to the ballet community extended far beyond his generous financial support. Despite the limitations of age, his mind remained as sharp as ever, serving as a wellspring of creativity and innovation.

One particular instance stands out. During the construction of sets for our performance of “Dracula,” Francis offered a simple suggestion. We were painting a sprawling mountain backdrop. It wqas particularly difficult to paint the bottom 2 feet and the top 7 to 16 feet. Francis suggested we turn the panelw sidewise and mount them 2 feet off the ground just for painting. It inspired us to create the Francis Award—a tribute to those who, like Francis, offer innovative solutions that enhance our artistic endeavors.

Beyond his contributions to the ballet, Francis was a beacon of kindness and warmth. His presence lifted our spirits, and his friendship enriched our lives immeasurably.

As we bid farewell to Francis, we do so with heavy hearts yet grateful souls. His legacy will endure not only in the performances we create but also in the memories we cherish and the lessons he imparted. Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit will forever dance in the halls of our hearts.

Rest in peace, dear Francis. You will be deeply missed, but your light will continue to shine brightly in our lives, guiding us forward with each step we take.

Thank you.
