A Whale’s Tail
by Dave Blottie
Did you know that the markings on a whale’s tail are as unique as a finger print? Did you know there are many thousands of scientists, professional photographers, and amatuers photographers who send their photographs to HappyWhale.com.
Happy Whale currently has over 110,000 whales tracked and registered, worldwide. Nearly 800,000 photos have been submitted, some of which have documented whales from as early as the 1980’s, many of which are still being tracked today. The happy whale.com website accepts photos from scientists and amateurs and their website currently has over 790,682 photos in their database, which cover 110, 564 individual whales around the world. Their website is Happywhale.com. The below photo is an example of a submission to the website, which shows the black and white patterns on Humpback whales, which winter near Cabo San Lucas. Some whales have been tracked from the 1980’s. Of course, AI is now used to identify individuals, some of which have been in the database since the 1980’s.
An informal global community of people making a difference.
