Mission

To preserve the environment of the Ridge Communities of Butte County, California.
To be a world class example of grass roots action to mitigate climate change

Vision

To create a thriving, resilient ecosystem in the Ridge Communities, where sustainable practices like biochar production reduce wildfire risks, enhance soil health, and serve as a model for local climate action, inspiring communities worldwide to adopt grassroots solutions for environmental preservation and climate change mitigation.

Objectives

Minimize wildfire risk.
Improve the health of natural and cultivated vegetation by directly enhancing soil health.
Reduce the impacts of climate change on local communities.[

Introduction

The 2025 Biochar Cook-Off project is a dynamic project. This project plan is subject to changes as a result of bringing more organizations and individuals onboard. This document will be kept up to date reflecting such changes.Read More

This document assumes you are familiar with biochar. If you are unfamiliar with biochar, please visit the first two pages of “An Inquiry Into Biochar” or do your own Internet search. We suggest you focus on things written in the last two years. The science and knowledge behind biochar has been and is changing rapidly.

High Level Plan

Basic Plan Overview:

By the end of 2024, we will produce 60 cubic yards of biochar at seven locations.
By February 2025, we will solicit biochar soil enhancement recipes from gardeners and soil scientists designed to improve soil health.
In February 2025, we will distribute biochar and the competing recipes to volunteer gardeners for testing.
In June 2025, we will tabulate the results of the testing.
In July 2025, we will host an awards ceremony to celebrate the results.
We will incorporate a free community BBQ into both the seven biochar production events and the awards ceremony.
Most importantly, we will make it a fun community involved event!

We are planing biochar burns at

Morgan Ridge (October 26, if burn permit available)
Paradise Magalia Gardens (November 16)
Paradise Stronger Gardens (November 23)
PRPD (TBD)
Nobel Park (November 30 to December 7))
Magalia (location to be determined, Steve will discuss location with Wade)
Concow(location to be determined, Steve will check with Peggy Moak)

We will reduce 440 cu yards of vegetation waste to 60 cu yds of biochar.

Plan Detail

A detailed plan is maintained in Gnome Planner. It is planned to be viewable below. The detail plan includes all tasks, all resources, all assignments, all task dependencies, and a Gnatt Chart. This project is subject to significant changes as additional groups and individuals join. The project plan in Planner will be kept up to date and viewable here.
