Service Above Self
by Page Morrisey
II joined Paradise Rotary Interact because it was a great way to get involved and stay involved by supporting my community and those around me. Service above self is putting those before me and I embody this by choosing to participate in voluntary event rather than participating in paid activities. The benefit I receive from voluntarily helping my community is the great feeling of using my skills for things that benefit not me, but the people I care about. One of my voluntary activities was helping to pick apples from overgrown trees to be donated to nearby food banks. I also participated in the special needs carnival by helping set up games as well as decorating and helping visitors create beautiful art projects. Another event I participated in was for Love Paradise where I and a few other volunteers came together to create a mural on the side of a kayak metal container at Paradise Lake. We then returned a week later to finish the job. There are many more volunteer activities I have in however I believe these are the ones that mean the most to me. I will not be stopping here. I intend to embody service above self throughout college and into my future. This is why I believe I am deserving of this scholarship.
