The Gold Nugget Chili Extravaganza
Wayne Angel
Each year the Gold Nugget Days celebration in the Town of Paradise is held during the last weekend of April, in commemoration of the founding of the gold nugget near old Dog Town (Magalia) in 1859.
Historically speaking, the Bean Feed has been held on Thursday afternoons prior to the Gold Nugget Queen contest and kicks off the Gold Nugget Days celebrations.
This year’s Bean Feed, held on Thursday afternoon during the annual Gold Nugget Days celebration in the Charter Hall of the Paradise United Methodist Church, was an absolute hit, with a turnout that filled the house.
Get ready to spice up your life because the secret’s out: it’s not a bean feed—it’s a Chili Extravaganza, all thanks to the dedication of Gary Lippincott and members of the Paradise Rotary Club.
And speaking of chili, forget about your run-of-the-mill beans—this shindig boasted not one, not two, but five different and downright delectable chilies! From savory meaty delights to a veggie-friendly option, Rotarian cooks Phoebe Harte, Dean Fender, Jason Pieper, Melissa Crick, and Trudi Angel brought their A-game to the table.
But wait, there’s more! Adding an extra dash of delight this year was the toe-tapping tunes of the Ridge Mountain Singers. Their melodious melodies had everyone grooving and moving as they savored each spoonful of chili goodness.
And let’s not forget the heartwarming reason behind it all—the event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Paradise, was all about raising funds for the countless community projects that the Rotary Club champions. With Rotarians and the Interact Club of Paradise, our enthusiastic High School service club, on hand to keep the chili bowls filled and the smiles flowing, there was no shortage of food, fun, and feel-good vibes
